Found this on GitHub and thought it was pretty interesting. It’s called AnyPS5 and instead of emulating the PS5, it actually converts PS5 executables into native Windows or Linux programs. So basically, the idea is to get PS5 games running directly on your PC without needing a traditional emulator. It’s still very early, but they’ve already got Dreaming Sarah running at 60 FPS on a GTX 1050 Ti, which is pretty impressive. Valve’s October 7 Steam Client Beta changes one small but useful Linux setting: Windows executables added to Steam as non-Steam games now use Proton by default. Until this update, users generally had to open a shortcut’s properties and select a compatibility tool themselves before trying to run a Windows program through Steam. The change is about the default launch path, not a new compatibility layer. Proton is Valve’s tool for running Windows games on Linux, built on Wine and additional components. It already handled Windows games in Steam; this beta applies that same default to Windows binaries registered as non-Steam entries. That can make manually added games and launchers easier to start from Steam, including on SteamOS devices. Valve’s beta notes also fix a launch failure that could happen after changing a non-Steam entry’s Target with the Browse button, and a case where Steam’s Stop button did not close a game launched by an external tool. The same update includes a Linux Steam Input controller-reordering fix and adds an option to disable the screensaver while a game is running. There are limits: the update is listed for the Preview/Beta client, and Valve has not announced in these notes when it will reach the stable client. Proton being selected automatically does not guarantee that a particular game or app will work; compatibility still depends on the software, and some titles have issues such as anti-cheat or launcher requirements. The National Hurricane Center’s 15:00 UTC Tuesday advisory puts Hurricane Simon at Category 1 strength, about 165 km west of Cabo Corrientes, moving west at just 4 km/h. Mexico has downgraded the hurricane warning for the Islas Marías to a watch. A hurricane watch remains from north of Escuinapa to Bahía Tempehuaya, and a tropical-storm watch from Cabo Corrientes to Escuinapa. The NHC expects Simon to move very slowly for the next couple of days before turning north later this week. Its latest rainfall forecast is now 25–50 mm across parts of Baja California Sur, Nayarit and Sinaloa by Friday, with isolated totals near 75 mm. Swells could still create life-threatening surf and rip currents, so reduced wind alerts do not mean coastal risks have ended. The storm’s eventual path remains uncertain. Rachel’s aftermath in Baja California is still being assessed. La Jornada reported Tuesday that authorities had recovered a fifth body in Ensenada and were searching for five people. AP’s Monday-evening report had counted four deaths there and six missing. The change reflects a later recovery; a consolidated count across both storms was not available in the reports checked. AP had separately reported one death in Guerrero during Simon’s rains. Max Verstappen won the 20-lap Singapore Sprint on Saturday after heavy rain delayed the start by about 30 minutes. The race produced a lead-changing crash on lap one and a late collision between McLaren team-mates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. George Russell made the stronger launch from the second spot on the grid and took the lead into Turn 1, but lost control at the final corner of the opening lap and crashed out. Verstappen inherited first place and held it through the restart, finishing 2.591 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Charles Leclerc completed the podium, with championship leader Kimi Antonelli fourth. The final lap changed the McLaren result: Norris tried to pass Piastri at Turn 5, the pair made contact and spun, and Norris finished eighth. Piastri did not complete the final lap but was classified 14th. The FIA’s classification records eight retirements in the sprint, including Russell, Sergio Pérez and Lance Stroll. The sprint is a separate short race; the Singapore Grand Prix itself is still scheduled for Sunday. Its unusual mix of wet-track risk, retirements and a team-mate collision gives the teams plenty to review before the main event. Developer Sword has demonstrated a PlayStation 2 DVD being read by a PS5 and launched through PS5SX2, a homebrew port of the PCSX2 emulator. The clip posted on October 9 shows the physical disc entering the console. Sword credited Al Azif for the disc-reading work. This is not official backward compatibility, and a retail PS5 will not simply play PS2 discs when one is inserted. The demonstration requires a jailbroken console and a homebrew setup. The disc also has to be dumped once before the emulator can run the game, so the drive is part of a preparation process rather than a plug-and-play way to boot any PS2 title. Compatibility has limits. The PS5’s internal drive cannot read CD-based PS2 games, and the clip does not establish that every DVD title works. The PS5SX2 project describes itself as a native PS2 emulator port for jailbroken PS5s; its repository asks users to provide their own BIOS and game files and lists only a subset of tested console and firmware combinations. It is an independent homebrew project, not a Sony feature. The advance is most interesting for preservation: owners may be able to use original DVD-based games with newer hardware, once they meet the setup and compatibility requirements. The practical questions are how many games run reliably and how much preparation each one needs. The developer’s demonstration is a milestone, not evidence of universal compatibility.
