Max Verstappen will start Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix from pole after setting the fastest lap in qualifying, 1:31.373. Charles Leclerc was 0.054 seconds behind for Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton third. The FIA says Hamilton led the first two qualifying segments, but Verstappen’s opening Q3 lap held up as Leclerc improved on his final attempt. It is Verstappen’s first Singapore Grand Prix pole. Kimi Antonelli qualified fourth and Lando Norris fifth. The 62-lap race is scheduled for 12:00 UTC on Sunday at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Verstappen also won Saturday’s rain-affected Sprint; this qualifying result sets the grid for the main event. Read our separate [Sprint report](https://www.mushimu.com/post/8895). Real Madrid beat Villarreal 1–0 on Saturday, but Vinícius Júnior’s sending-off became the match’s defining moment. After the forward scored what appeared to be a second goal, VAR review overturned it and referee Isidro Díaz de Mera showed him a straight red for pulling Nathan Saliba’s hair in the buildup. Yan Diomande scored the only goal. LaLiga’s match record confirms the final score and the overturned goal; Real Madrid’s report also confirms the sending-off. The sequence raises a clear question for fans: should VAR intervene on an off-ball foul in the buildup after play has continued? Max Verstappen won the 20-lap Singapore Sprint on Saturday after heavy rain delayed the start by about 30 minutes. The race produced a lead-changing crash on lap one and a late collision between McLaren team-mates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. George Russell made the stronger launch from the second spot on the grid and took the lead into Turn 1, but lost control at the final corner of the opening lap and crashed out. Verstappen inherited first place and held it through the restart, finishing 2.591 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Charles Leclerc completed the podium, with championship leader Kimi Antonelli fourth. The final lap changed the McLaren result: Norris tried to pass Piastri at Turn 5, the pair made contact and spun, and Norris finished eighth. Piastri did not complete the final lap but was classified 14th. The FIA’s classification records eight retirements in the sprint, including Russell, Sergio Pérez and Lance Stroll. The sprint is a separate short race; the Singapore Grand Prix itself is still scheduled for Sunday. Its unusual mix of wet-track risk, retirements and a team-mate collision gives the teams plenty to review before the main event. ![Chicago Bears tribute to Mike Ditka](/media/assets/90912d13-04bf-4b1d-8375-f91e039ede5b/media.webp) Mike Ditka’s death has renewed attention on a part of his career that still shapes how fans think about the tight end position: his 1961 rookie season. The Chicago Bears selected him fifth overall and used him as a receiver, not simply as an extra blocker. He caught 58 passes for 1,076 yards and 12 touchdowns, becoming the first tight end to record a 1,000-yard receiving season. That total was extraordinary for the role at the time. The Pro Football Hall of Fame notes that George Halas saw a way to use Ditka downfield, where his size and receiving ability could force defenses to account for another target. The position has since become far more varied, with tight ends expected to block, run routes across the middle and stretch the field. Ditka’s rookie numbers offered an early, visible case for that broader job description. His 1,076 receiving yards stood as the rookie record for a tight end for 63 seasons, until Brock Bowers reached 1,144 yards for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024. Ditka’s rookie year also brought 12 touchdown catches, an NFL Rookie of the Year award and a Pro Bowl selection. These are more than longevity stats: they show how early in his career he became a model for a more prominent receiving role. Ditka later became the face of the 1985 Bears as head coach, but his playing career is part of the same story. His performance helped establish the tight end as a potential centerpiece of an offense, and the Hall of Fame credits Halas with recognizing that potential. The exact tactical changes were part of a wider evolution in football, but Ditka’s production made the case in a way teams could measure. This historical angle complements our [report on Ditka’s death and career](https://www.mushimu.com/post/8853). Philadelphia will be without running back Saquon Barkley and wide receiver DeVonta Smith when the Eagles meet the Jacksonville Jaguars in London on Sunday. The Eagles listed both starters out with hamstring injuries; Barkley was hurt in last week’s loss to the Rams, while Smith has missed two straight games. Five Eagles in total were ruled out, including wide receiver Hollywood Brown, safety Marcus Epps and center Drew Kendall. The absences reshape an offense already adjusting to major personnel changes. Philadelphia released veteran quarterback Andy Dalton on Friday, leaving Jalen Hurts as the starter, Tanner McKee as the backup and rookie Cole Payton as the developmental third quarterback, NFL.com reported. The team also signed running back Dameon Pierce to its active roster this week. With Barkley unavailable, Will Shipley is expected to take on a larger role, with Pierce also available in the backfield. The game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. ET Sunday, Oct. 11. Philadelphia enters at 2–2; Jacksonville is 3–1. The Eagles’ official matchup page lists the full injury report and broadcast information. The status report confirms who is unavailable, but it does not provide a timetable for Barkley’s or Smith’s return beyond the London game. Mike Ditka, the Hall of Fame tight end whose intensity helped define the Chicago Bears, has died at 86. His family announced his death on Friday, Oct. 9, in a statement. No cause was given in the family statement reported by the Associated Press. Ditka’s influence began before “Da Coach.” Drafted by Chicago in 1961, he became one of the NFL’s first receiving threats at tight end, a position then often used chiefly for blocking. He played for the Bears, Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, finishing with 427 catches, 5,812 yards and 43 touchdowns. He was selected to five Pro Bowls and entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988. He returned to Chicago as head coach in 1982. The high point came with the 1985 Bears, who went 18–1 and beat New England 46–10 in Super Bowl XX. Ditka became the first person to win an NFL championship as a player, assistant coach and head coach. The team’s mix of a historically dominant defense and outsized personalities made it one of the league’s most memorable champions; its “Super Bowl Shuffle” video became part of the season’s enduring cultural footprint. Ditka’s playing résumé also included a 1963 NFL championship with Chicago and a Super Bowl win as a Dallas assistant. After leaving the Bears in 1992, he coached the New Orleans Saints before moving into broadcasting. He also used his public profile to advocate for better health and retirement benefits for former players. His legacy was larger than a championship season or a sideline persona: as a player, he helped change what teams expected from the tight end, and as a coach he became inseparable from Chicago’s landmark 1985 team. The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s career profile and the AP’s obituary provide more detail. Tampa Bay snapped its 0-4 start with a 24-16 win over Dallas on Thursday night, leaning on Bucky Irving’s career-best 165 rushing yards and a steady performance from rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels. The undrafted rookie, making only his second start while Baker Mayfield sits with a thumb injury, completed 19 of 25 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown without turning the ball over. [Buccaneers game report](https://www.buccaneers.com/news/bucs-win-dallas-cowboys-week-5-2026-score-24-16) · [Associated Press report](https://www.bostonglobe.com/2026/10/08/sports/buccaneers-cowboys-bucky-irving/) Irving scored twice, including the go-ahead touchdown after a 72-yard run helped set up Tampa Bay’s decisive third-quarter surge. The Bucs forced three turnovers, and linebacker Alex Anzalone’s interception with just over a minute left ended Dallas’ last chance to rally. The Cowboys still moved the ball through the air—Dak Prescott threw for 316 yards and George Pickens had 130 receiving yards—but Prescott was intercepted twice. The result gives Tampa Bay its first win of the season, though the team remains 1-4. Dallas falls to 2-3 after entering the night with one of the league’s most productive offenses. The game drew active postgame discussion around whether the upset was the season’s biggest so far and what the loss says about Dallas’ defense and decision-making. The NFL filed a friend-of-the-court brief on Thursday, Oct. 8, urging the U.S. Supreme Court to review New Jersey’s fight with Kalshi over sports event contracts. The case asks who has authority over these markets: the federal Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), or state gambling regulators. The Court has not agreed to hear the case or ruled on the issue. The official docket lists Kalshi’s response to New Jersey’s petition as due Nov. 9. The disagreement turns on how the contracts are classified. Kalshi says its yes-or-no event contracts are federally regulated financial products; New Jersey argues sports contracts function as gambling and should follow state betting laws. The Third Circuit ruled for Kalshi in April. The Sixth and Ninth Circuits have reached the opposite conclusion in related cases, creating a split that the NFL says warrants Supreme Court review. The league says the stakes are already large: its filing estimates that NFL-related contracts accounted for $1.8 billion of $3.3 billion in prediction-market trading on the first Sunday of this season. The NFL argues state systems offer stronger safeguards, including limits on bets it considers vulnerable to manipulation and a minimum age of 21. Those are the league’s claims in its brief, not findings by the Court. Kalshi disputes the NFL’s criticism, telling AP that the CFTC is actively policing the markets and working on rules; Polymarket has argued for a consistent federal framework rather than a patchwork of state laws. The Supreme Court’s eventual decision on whether to take the case could determine whether these sports contracts face state-by-state gambling rules or remain under federal oversight. Lane Johnson has retired from the NFL after 14 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, ending a career that brought two Super Bowl titles, six Pro Bowl selections and five Associated Press All-Pro honors. He announced the decision Tuesday, two days after being inactive for Philadelphia’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Johnson said he had hoped to play one final season, but that his personal and family priorities had changed. “Right now, it is critical that I focus on my mental health,” he wrote in his retirement statement. A first-round pick in 2013, Johnson started 171 regular-season games, all for Philadelphia, and helped the Eagles reach three Super Bowls. His departure leaves the 2–2 team without a cornerstone of its offensive line as it tries to arrest a two-game slide. Rookie Markel Bell started in Johnson’s place against Los Angeles. Novak Djokovic reached a career milestone few will ever approach, claiming his 102nd singles title of a remarkable career when Alex de Minaur turned back at 0-1 in the China Open final on Saturday. Djokovic, 39, led the 27-year-old Australian 7-6 (7-3), 0-1 when de Minaur retired with an apparent left-thigh injury, ending a 68-minute first set that had featured two medical timeouts. The result marks the 24-time Grand Slam champion's first title in just over a year and a compelling reminder that he can still win on the biggest stages. The victory also cemented several records. It is Djokovic's 21st consecutive year with at least one singles title - the longest such streak in history - and places him third on the all-time list, behind only Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103). It was his 7th China Open title, extending to 34 his unbeaten record at the tournament in a run that has never ended on Beijing soil. "I always have high expectations and want to visualise myself with the trophy, but particularly here in Beijing, the place where I've never lost," Djokovic said, per BBC Sport. The win arrives after a difficult season in which Djokovic's body repeatedly failed him, including a surprise first-ever first-round defeat at the US Open and a "serious health condition" he said aggravated the oppressive heat. He has limited his schedule to protect himself, and BBC Sport reports the Beijing trophy will move him back inside the world's top 10 - a projection BBC offers rather than a confirmed ranking change. Djokovic reached the final by defeating world No. 2 Alexander Zverev and by advancing after Daniil Medvedev was disqualified in the semi-final. Ahead of him, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the rest of 2026 with a knee injury, leaving Zverev certain to overtake him at the top of the rankings by year's end. The NFL has suspended line judge Jeff Seeman for two games and referee Adrian Hill for one after separate incidents involving players during Week 4, The Associated Press reports. Seeman was disciplined after swearing at Cardinals tight end Trey McBride during a dispute over a no-call. Hill was suspended after yelling at Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson, who had tried to help him up after a collision knocked the referee down. The league said both suspensions were for unprofessional conduct. The penalties put the NFL's standards for officials under scrutiny alongside the conduct rules enforced against players. Update, Oct. 6: The NFL’s official Week 5 injury report lists Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson as OUT for the game against Houston and identifies the injury as a hamstring issue. That is a firmer status than NFL Network’s earlier report, which said an ankle sprain left him with only an outside chance to play. Jackson left Baltimore’s Week 4 win over Tennessee after the second quarter and did not return. Tyler Huntley is expected to start in his place. The updated report settles Jackson’s availability for this game, though it does not give a return date. Illustration: AI-generated artwork, not a photograph of Lamar Jackson.
