Erie shooting leaves nine dead; police say all victims were dead before officers arrived
Authorities in Erie, Pennsylvania, say eight people were killed in a shooting at a home near East 7th and Perry Streets on Friday, Oct. 9. The suspected gunman also died, bringing the total to nine. Police Chief Rick Lorah said the 45-year-old man was related to seven of the victims. Authorities said the victims included two young children and a woman who was eight months pregnant. The City of Erie says officers arrived within minutes of a ShotSpotter alert at about 4:53 p.m. Investigators determined that all eight victims and the suspected shooter had died before police arrived. The city said no gunshots were fired after officers reached the scene; sounds reported during the response came from flash-bang devices used by SWAT officers. Officials said responders initially had limited information about whether the suspected gunman remained inside or whether others were in danger. They assessed the scene and sought a search warrant before entering. The city said the deaths were not the result of a prolonged standoff or delayed police response. The investigation remains active. Lorah declined to discuss a motive, and the Erie County district attorney urged the public not to spread unverified claims. The city and police have said they will release further confirmed information as it becomes available.
