Ethiopia and Eritrea trade warnings at the UN as Tigray fighting deepens
Ethiopia and Eritrea escalated their dispute at the United Nations on Saturday. Eritrea asked the Security Council to take “deterrent measures” against Ethiopia, a day after Addis Ababa invoked its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter in a letter accusing Eritrean forces of entering and occupying parts of northern Ethiopia. Those claims remain contested. Eritrea denies the reported incursion and says Ethiopia’s pursuit of Red Sea access threatens its sovereignty. The Associated Press said it could not independently verify the alleged troop movements; Ethiopia’s letter did not identify the areas it said were occupied or provide evidence. The exchange of letters is not itself a declaration of war. The U.N. secretary-general said he was gravely concerned by renewed fighting in Tigray, Afar and Amhara, called for an immediate halt to hostilities and urged the parties to return to dialogue under the Pretoria Agreement.
