Financial markets are on edge as the United States awaits the crucial October jobs report, a release that could significantly influence the trajectory of the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. With the markets already pricing in an 80% chance of a interest rate hike in December, the upcoming employment data is poised to be a decisive factor in the Fed's decision-making process. Economic analysts suggest that a "hot" jobs report—showing stronger-than-expected employment growth—could force the Federal Reserve to maintain higher interest rates for longer to combat persistent inflation. Conversely, a softer report might bolster hopes for a more accommodative policy. The stakes are exceptionally high, as the Fed balances the need to maintain labor market strength with its primary mandate of controlling inflation. The volatility in the futures market underscores the uncertainty facing investors. A strong jobs report would provide the Fed with the room to focus more heavily on its inflation target, while a miss could complicate the current economic landscape. As the reporting deadline approaches, the financial world remains poised to react to the data, which could trigger a major repricing of assets across global markets. ~Economy ~Finance

In a significant shift in U.S. foreign policy, President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the United States will end its billion in annual military aid to Israel by the end of the year. The decision follows an agreement reached months ago with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to President Trump. The announcement, which coincided with the ongoing U.S. midterm elections, marks a major departure from the long-standing policy of substantial military assistance to Israel. While the administration's current memorandum of understanding provides .8 billion in annual assistance until 2028, the new agreement will see this funding cease at the end of 2026. President Trump stated that Israel 'no longer needs' the assistance and emphasized his 'tremendous relationship' with Prime Minister Netanyahu. He added that while the annual funding will cease, Israel would still be able to purchase weapons and military equipment from the United States as needed. The decision comes amid growing political pressure within the United States, particularly from Democratic lawmakers and other critics who have increasingly challenged the scale and nature of U.S. support for Israel. The move is expected to have significant implications for regional stability in the Middle East and the ongoing political debate over U.S. involvement in foreign conflicts. ~WorldNews ~Politics

The geopolitical standoff between the United States and Iran has reached a fever pitch as both nations exchange threats and military actions regarding control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Following recent U.S. military strikes on the Iranian island of Qeshm, tensions have escalated, with Tehran dismissing Washington's responses to its demands as "unconvincing." The tension comes at a critical moment, just as the United States was entering the final stages of its 2026 midterm elections. Reports indicate that U.S. forces conducted what they described as "limited, defensive strikes" against targets near the Strait, aimed at deterring Iranian aggression. In response, Iran has signaled that it is prepared to reopen the waterway within two days, provided the United States meets a set of seven specific conditions. Among Iran's core demands are the immediate lifting of U.S. sanctions, the removal of the naval blockade, and the cessation of hostilities on all fronts. Tehran has emphasized that its offer to restore security to the Strait is conditional, contingent on the U.S. meeting its "legitimate" demands. Diplomatic channels, including indirect talks through mediators, remain active, but the situation remains highly volatile. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, with a significant portion of the global oil supply passing through its waters. Recent maritime security reports have highlighted an increase in incidents involving commercial shipping, with reports of tankers hitting naval mines or being struck by fire in the region. As both nations engage in a high-stakes game of brinkmanship, the international community is closely watching for any sign of a breakthrough or further escalation. The outcome of these negotiations could have profound implications for global energy markets and the stability of the Middle East. ~WorldNews ~MiddleEast

The conflict in Ukraine has seen a significant and deadly escalation as Russian forces launched a massive, coordinated barrage of drones and missiles into several regions on November 3, 2026. The overnight attacks have resulted in numerous civilian casualties, including dozens killed in a strike on a humanitarian aid site, and have caused widespread damage to Ukraine's energy infrastructure. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the assault involved approximately 289 drones, 17 ballistic missiles, and 59 cruise missiles, targeting nine different regions across the country. One of the most tragic incidents occurred in the Zaporizhzhia region, where a Russian strike hit a school serving as a center for humanitarian aid distribution. Local authorities reported that at least 26 to 31 people were killed in the attack, with many others still missing. The victims included police officers and rescue workers. In northeastern Kharkiv, a combined missile and drone attack wounded at least 62 people and struck a medical facility, forcing the emergency evacuation of approximately 200 patients. The attacks have once again placed heavy strain on Ukraine's healthcare system and emergency services. The scale of the aerial campaign has also targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure, causing widespread power outages as the country prepares for the onset of winter. This surge in attacks on the power grid has been part of a systematic effort to disrupt civilian life and essential services. This escalation follows the expiration of a recent, US-brokered ceasefire in the southern Kherson region, which had been intended to facilitate humanitarian access to the occupied city of Oleshky. The collapse of the truce, and the subsequent intensity of the strikes, has significantly dampened hopes for immediate diplomatic progress. The timing is particularly critical as the United States prepares to host working-level negotiations in Abu Dhabi on November 10–11. While Russia's Ministry of Defense claims to have intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones, the impact on the ground in cities like Kyiv, Dnipro, and Sumy underscores a highly effective and devastating campaign. The attacks highlight a continued pattern of targeting civilian-populated areas and vital infrastructure, further complicating the path toward any potential peace negotiations. ~WorldNews ~Ukraine

The latest scientific reports released in November 2026 have issued a stark warning regarding the Earth's cryosphere, stating that exceeding the 1.5°C Paris Agreement target will trigger large-scale and potentially irreversible damage to the planet's ice sheets, glaciers, and permafrost. The joint findings from the UNEP/ICCI and the "State of the Cryosphere 2026" report suggest that much of this damage is already being "locked in" by current warming levels. The reports highlight that current global temperatures have reached levels that are increasingly unsafe for the Arctic, the Antarctic, and mountain glaciers. One of the most striking examples of rapid change is observed in Switzerland, where 20% of its glacial mass has been lost in just the last five years. This loss has immediate implications for water availability and ecosystem stability in mountainous regions. In the Arctic, recent data shows record-low sea-ice extents in both 2025 and 2026, reversing recent trends and indicating a more rapid decline than previously anticipated. Experts warn that such shifts in sea ice can have cascading effects on global weather patterns and ocean currents. Furthermore, the reports emphasize that sea levels could rise by up to 5 cm per year by 2150, a significant acceleration from current rates. The "overshoot" scenario—where global temperatures temporarily exceed the 1.5°C threshold—threatens to create permanent changes in the Earth's cryosphere. These include thawing permafrost, which releases trapped greenhouse gases, and accelerated melting of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, which further drives sea-level rise. The consensus among climate scientists is clear: while the damage to many systems may be inevitable, the intensity and scale of the consequences can still be mitigated. Drastic and immediate transitions from fossil fuels are essential to prevent the most catastrophic "meltdown" scenarios described in the reports. The window to limit these irreversible changes is narrowing rapidly as the planet continues to reach new temperature extremes. ~WorldNews ~Climate

Google released the Gemini 4 family in October 2026, closing the month with the general availability of Gemini 4 Argon and then announcing Gemini 4 Carbon two weeks later. Gemini 4 Argon is the newest frontier reasoning model from Google, which said it excels at deep work on complex, real-world problems in areas such as coding, finance, legal analysis, cybersecurity and scientific research. Google reported that Argon ranked first on the Vals Index across critical economic sectors, including finance, coding, legal work and tax, and priced the model at 2 dollars per million input tokens and 10 dollars per million output tokens, with cached input tokens at 95 percent off. Google announced Gemini 4 Carbon on October 28 as its strongest model yet, focused on long-horizon engineering and cybersecurity defense. Google reported that Carbon reached the top position on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index version 5.0 with a score of 59, and cited results of 88.2 percent on SEC-bench Pro, 54.8 percent on ExploitGym and 71.0 percent on CWE-bench, describing improvements in generating secure code and patching. Google describes both releases as backed by a multi-layer safety stack that includes jailbreak resistance, agent alignment monitoring and prompt-injection defenses. Carbon is designed for sustained agentic workflows lasting several days, Google said, and will start with pre-release testing through the Fairwind Program before wider access. The fast move from Argon to Carbon shows how quickly Google is advancing frontier AI capabilities. The general availability of Argon to broader developer and enterprise audiences, and the early reported results for Carbon, point to longer agentic coding and security workflows in the near term. ![A researcher holds the photonic circuit used to separate overlapping light modes.](https://news.stanford.edu/__data/assets/image/0027/194544/261007_Roques-Carmes-Mor-00792.jpg) Image: Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA), via Stanford Report. A camera can blend two sources into the same patch of an image, even when the light carries clues that they are separate. A new silicon photonic circuit demonstrated a way to read some of those clues directly: it learns the coherence modes of mixed light and routes them to different outputs. The researchers tested the chip with infrared lasers whose light fields overlapped. In a nine-input circuit, they separated the two strongest coherence modes and measured more than 98% fidelity against a tomography method run on the same chip. A separate rank-three test showed the approach can handle more than two modes. This is a lab demonstration, not a ready-made camera upgrade. The promise is that separating light by its correlation structure could reveal information that ordinary intensity images collapse together—potentially useful in microscopy, astronomy, and optical sensing. The team is now exploring whether the method could help analyze light from distant galaxies. The study appeared in *Nature Photonics* on October 30. ![STAR's illustration of two back-to-back particle jets crossing the hot matter created in an oxygen collision.](https://www.bnl.gov/today/body_pics/2026/10/Jet_Quenching_O2O2_Collision_FINAL_300dpi-hr.png) Image: Valerie A. Lentz / Brookhaven National Laboratory, illustrating jet quenching in oxygen collisions. A tiny, short-lived droplet of quark–gluon plasma may leave a measurable clue: one of a pair of energetic particle jets comes out weaker than the other. New STAR measurements at Brookhaven’s RHIC found that clue in oxygen–oxygen collisions, a much smaller system than the gold nuclei often used to study this primordial state of matter. The team analyzed collisions recorded in 2021 at 200 billion electron volts per pair of nucleons. In high-activity events, the yields of recoiling charged particles and jets were suppressed by about 20% compared with low-activity events. The collaboration interprets this as jet quenching: particles lose energy while crossing the hot, dense medium. The result was published in *Physical Review Letters* on October 20. The useful question is not whether oxygen collisions can make this kind of matter at all—similar signs have also been measured at CERN’s LHC. It is how small and cool a collision system can be while still producing the medium. RHIC’s result extends the evidence to a lower collision energy for oxygen and helps researchers narrow that boundary. This is indirect evidence. The plasma exists for an extraordinarily brief instant and cannot be observed directly; scientists infer it from the particles that escape. More oxygen data recorded during RHIC’s final run may help test how the signal changes as the system size and collision conditions shift. The incident mirrors a similar attack in France last month, which caused widespread disruption and significant financial losses. Retailers in Belgium, Estonia, Ireland, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Sweden reported issues with their refrigeration systems, with some confirming that the problem was due to a cyber attack. In Ireland, Musgrave Group confirmed that all 13 SuperValu stores affected had fully resolved the issue, with refrigeration systems returning to normal. Carrefour Belgium reported disruptions at 15 out of its 700 stores, while Delhaize supermarkets in Belgium and Luxembourg saw around 40 locations affected. The incidents followed an earlier attack in France that targeted hundreds of stores, causing widespread disruption. Sabcobel, a Belgian company manufacturing some of the affected refrigerators, stated that the attack involved switching evaporators to defrost mode, leading to unexpected warming. The company emphasized that physical modifications, not just software updates, are necessary to secure these systems against future attacks. This method was likely used again, echoing the approach seen in last month's French incident. In Flanders, northern Belgium, a Delhaize branch in Hoeilaart told news website Het Laatste Nieuws it had lost €100,000 (£83,500) worth of produce. In Sweden, a Coop store reported that seven out of 800 locations were affected, though the situation was described as contained. The incident has prompted calls for increased cybersecurity measures across the food supply chain, particularly in protecting operational technology used in refrigeration systems. The Paris prosecutor’s office has launched a formal inquiry, and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu directed France’s national cybersecurity agency, Ansii, to examine the case. Belgium and Sweden’s national cyber-security agencies are also monitoring the situation, while the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre is collaborating with international partners to understand the details of the attack. Experts warn that the attacks represent a growing threat to critical infrastructure, including food storage and distribution networks. Patrick Lamplmair of the cybersecurity firm Tributech said cyber-attackers would keep going 'until it stops working' because the method was 'cheap and the damage is immediate'. Many refrigeration systems had known and as yet unfixed flaws, he said. The EU food and agriculture commissioner, Christophe Hansen, called the repeated cyber-attacks deeply concerning, describing them as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the food supply chain and undermine consumer confidence. However, the exact method used in the French attack is not specified in this report, as noted by RTÉ. A byte-level fuzzer can spend most of its time producing inputs that a parser rejects immediately. When that happens, the deeper code stays unexplored. Structure-aware fuzzing changes what gets mutated: it works with fields, nodes, or grammar rules, then serializes the result for the program you are testing. ### Give the fuzzer a map For software you own or have explicit permission to test, describe the input in a schema the harness understands. Google's libprotobuf-mutator, for example, mutates Protocol Buffer fields and can feed those messages to libFuzzer. For another format, a custom mutator or an intermediate schema can serve the same role. LLVM's fuzzing guide describes this approach for structured inputs such as compiler data. This helps the fuzzer reach logic that depends on several fields agreeing—something random byte flips may rarely achieve. It does not make every generated input realistic, nor does it prove a security bug exists. Keep malformed cases in the plan too. If your program accepts untrusted files, lengths, nesting, missing fields, and inconsistent values may be exactly where validation defects appear. A generator that only emits perfectly valid messages can skip those checks. Make the harness reset between cases, and preserve any crash input exactly as in Parts [10](https://www.mushimu.com/post/9212) and [12](https://www.mushimu.com/post/9218). A useful next step is to compare coverage from a small seed corpus using ordinary mutation and a structured mutator, against the same local build. Record the setup and treat a new path as a lead to inspect—not a verdict about impact. A business jet carrying nine people crashed into a residential neighborhood in South Florida on Sunday at 12:50pm local time, killing all onboard. The Learjet 60 departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was en route to the Bahamas. Flight tracking data revealed the plane descended at an alarming rate, exceeding 32,000 feet per minute before impact. Pilots reported turbulence, icing, and precipitation shortly before the crash, requesting to climb higher. Despite these conditions, the aircraft entered a steep dive, surpassing its design limits. The pilot declared an emergency, stating they were descending at 8,000 feet per minute and later at 20,000 feet per minute, with a final distress call indicating they were 'going to crash into the ground'. Eyewitness accounts and video footage show the aircraft striking the ground at high speed before exploding in a fireball. The crash site was near a busy roadway, with flames flickering around debris and chunks of pavement. A woman working nearby reported that electricity in the area had been out for approximately two hours following the incident. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the incident as a 'cataclysmic' event, noting that the plane appeared to have struck the ground like a missile, leaving behind a significant crater on the side of the road. There were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities among people on the ground, though local authorities evacuated about 600 residents from a nearby mobile home community. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is supporting the National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation into the cause of the crash. Kimi Antonelli became Formula One’s youngest world champion on Sunday after finishing third in the Mexico City Grand Prix. At just 20 years and 68 days old, he surpassed Sebastian Vettel's previous record of 23 years and 134 days set in 2010. The race was stopped after a brief safety car deployment on lap 46 of 71 after Valtteri Bottas suffered a high-speed front-left suspension failure down the straight, with his Cadillac pitching uncontrollably into the barriers at turn one. Despite this, Antonelli maintained his position to finish third, allowing him to clinch the championship. His parents and sister were there to embrace him when he stepped out of the car. Antonelli’s victory came after a tense final lap where he admitted he could barely see the track due to emotional overwhelm. 'On the last lap, I just backed off, because I just couldn’t see the track. I was getting emotional,' he later told reporters. The outcome reshaped the overall standings, with Mercedes leading the constructors’ championship at 630 points, ahead of Ferrari's 504 points. Antonelli’s teammate George Russell finished sixth, falling behind in the title race. Meanwhile, Bottas received medical attention after his crash but walked to an ambulance and gave a thumbs-up, signaling his recovery from the incident. He was the first Italian champion since 1953. The next races are set to take place in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, though their status remains uncertain due to ongoing geopolitical tensions. Pöntinen et al. 2026; [CC BY-SA 3.0 IGO](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/igo/), unchanged. ESA’s Euclid telescope was designed to make deep, steady images of distant galaxies. In September 2026, moving-object software developed by University of Helsinki researcher Mikko Pöntinen picked out something much closer: the first previously unknown comet discovered by Euclid, now designated C/2026 S1 (Euclid). The telescope had imaged known comets before, but this one was new to the catalogues. The software flagged a streak in Euclid Deep Field North. Pöntinen predicted where the object should appear and found it in five image sets: 16 exposures taken between September 16 and 24. Combining shorter exposures along its predicted path revealed a fuzzy coma of dust and gas. After checks against known comets and asteroids found no match, the team reported it to the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center, which confirmed it on October 8. This was an unusual catch. Euclid avoids the dusty plane where many small Solar System bodies are found, and its “step-and-stare” survey usually moves on after imaging a patch of sky. Yet moving objects still matter to its galaxy maps: their streaks can add unwanted light, so identifying them helps researchers separate foreground objects from distant galaxies. This comet is about 1.3 billion kilometres from Earth and follows an orbit that takes thousands of years; more observations will refine the estimate. C/2026 S1 is not a target for ESA’s future Comet Interceptor mission. Its value is as a real-world test of how Euclid’s archive and moving-object alerts can help find and validate rare visitors hidden in survey data. Binance resumed customer withdrawals for major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum after a record $6.3bn hack, following a phased reopening initiated on Sunday. The exchange initially froze withdrawals as it investigated the breach but announced it had begun restoring access after 2pm Singapore time. This move came amid growing concerns over the security vulnerabilities in the cryptocurrency sector. The FBI attributed the theft to North Korea's state-sponsored group TraderTraitor, also known as the Lazarus Group, and dated it to on or about October 29, 2026. The agency stated that it observed TraderTraitor actors converting stolen assets into Ethereum and warned private entities to block transactions linked to these addresses to prevent further laundering of stolen funds. Binance said it had replenished 90% of the stolen assets using company funds. The remaining 10% consisted of less liquid tokens that could take longer to buy. Separately, it said withdrawals for additional assets and networks would be restored in phases as security checks were completed. The platform said it had set aside about $6.34bn from its reserves, including a bitcoin reserve and futures insurance fund, to cover the losses. Richard Teng, Binance’s co-chief executive, emphasized that users would not bear the financial impact of the hack. BBC background reporting traced North Korean cryptocurrency theft back to 2017 and said it was estimated to generate half of the country's foreign currency income. The FBI previously attributed the February 2025 Bybit hack to TraderTraitor, according to that reporting. The BBC also described cryptocurrency theft as a source of revenue for North Korea's military, including its nuclear programme. ![Image](/media/assets/fb763664-d3a5-4eef-9c5d-c0188ec66d07/media.webp) Image via [aljazeera.com](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/11/1/bolivia-declares-state-of-emergency-over-el-nino-weather-pattern). Bolivia has declared a nationwide state of emergency to address the severe impacts of the El Nino weather phenomenon. El Nino, a global climate phenomenon that occurs roughly every two to seven years, is part of the planet’s natural weather cycle. The declaration of emergency comes amid growing concerns over the potential for severe weather events, including floods and landslides, as the rainy season begins. In December 2025, flooding in the Santa Cruz region resulted in dozens of deaths, highlighting the severity of the situation. Researchers estimate that the current El Nino could cause around 451,000 excess heat-related deaths worldwide from June 2026 to February 2027. These projections are based on historical data and seasonal forecasts, with the Climate Impact Lab at the University of Chicago suggesting that the event is a 'postcard from the future,' offering a glimpse of temperatures that may become normal within two decades due to climate change. The report highlights that developing nations, particularly those in Africa’s Sahel region, will bear the brunt of these impacts. The declaration of emergency aims to coordinate rescue efforts and allocate resources effectively to mitigate the effects of El Nino. President Paz emphasized the need for cooperation across all institutions to address the crisis. The World Meteorological Organization has reported a nearly 100 percent likelihood that El Nino will continue through February 2027, underscoring the urgency of preparedness measures. Ukrainian evacuees from the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky have reunited with family members after a six-day humanitarian ceasefire facilitated by US First Lady Melania Trump and Pope Leo XIV. Residents had to travel through Russian-occupied territory to southern Russia, then fly to Belarus before crossing into Ukraine's Chernihiv region. The journey was perilous, as supply routes to Oleshky had been disrupted by fighting and drones, with food deliveries halted in May, pushing hundreds into starvation. The ceasefire allowed the road out of the city to be cleared of mines. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked US First Lady Melania Trump for her role in brokering the ceasefire that paved the way for their evacuation. He emphasized that all evacuees would receive necessary assistance, highlighting the importance of effective government coordination to help them adapt to life after years of isolation. Some people chose to stay behind despite the lack of gas, electricity, and running water, with Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova pledging continued cooperation with Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Lubinets to provide humanitarian aid. The evacuation marked the first major humanitarian truce in more than four years of Russia’s war on Ukraine. While the ceasefire has held since Tuesday, fighting continues elsewhere along the front lines, with both sides engaging in drone attacks. According to the BBC, bridges across the nearby River Dnipro have been destroyed, and the riverbank has been mined, making it a hazardous area for those attempting to flee. ![Chandra X-ray image of M101, the Pinwheel Galaxy](https://www.chandra.cfa.harvard.edu/photo/2026/m101/m101_xray.jpg) Image credit: X-ray: NASA/CXC/Univ. of Alabama/M. Muhibullah et al. A survey can miss an energetic object if it shines outside the band the telescope usually searches. In a paper published in *Nature Astronomy* on September 9, 2026, researchers reported 84 “hypersoft X-ray sources” across six galaxies, identified by re-examining observations in NASA’s Chandra archive. Typical X-ray binaries are detected mainly above 0.3 keV. These sources appeared primarily or exclusively below that threshold, with models suggesting that much of their energy emerges as extreme-ultraviolet light. That band is difficult to observe: hydrogen and helium gas absorb much of it, while the faint, very soft X-rays require long exposures. The team found the objects by looking for sources visible in Chandra’s lowest-energy images but absent at higher energies. Their identity is still uncertain. The authors propose that the category may include several kinds of accreting binary systems, involving white dwarfs, neutron stars, or black holes pulling material from companion stars. Some white-dwarf systems may be related to Type Ia supernova progenitors, and the sources’ ultraviolet output could help ionize gas in galaxies—but the study identifies possibilities, not confirmed progenitors or a demonstrated contribution to galactic ionization. The useful lesson is about astronomy’s blind spots: an object can be bright and still go unnoticed when its light falls in a difficult-to-measure part of the spectrum.
