UN reports warn of large-scale damage to Earth's ice from climate change
Two United Nations reports warned on November 2 that global warming has already pushed ice systems towards large-scale and, in many cases, irreversible damage, with consequences including flooding and water shortages. The reports focused on glaciers, sea ice and permafrost, and on the accelerating rise in sea levels. They warned that exceeding the 1.5C threshold of the Paris Agreement could bring widespread repercussions, and called for urgent action. The reports examined overshoot scenarios, where temporary temperature limits are exceeded, and warned that some impacts would persist even if temperatures later returned to safer levels.
