NASA is preparing for a high-stakes orbital dance as its ESCAPADE twins approach Earth. The mission, designed to study solar-wind-driven atmospheric escape, will perform a complex series of maneuvers known as "Oberth maneuvers." These involve using gravity assists combined with strategic engine burns to significantly increase a spacecraft's velocity. On November 7 and 9, the ESCAPADE probes will execute these powered flybys of Earth. By increasing their speed from approximately 6.3 to 6.7 miles per second, the probes will be on a trajectory that allows them to reach Mars by September 2027. This mission is a pioneering attempt at using dual-probe formations to study the interactions between solar wind and planetary atmospheres from multiple perspectives. The mission's success is critical for understanding the mechanisms behind atmospheric escape, which is a vital piece of the puzzle in understanding the history and evolution of planets, including our own. As the probes prepare for their transit through the solar system, the scientific community is eager to see how this innovative propulsion and orbital mechanics strategy performs in deep space. ~Space ~NASA
