Does Dark Mode Save Phone Battery? OLED and Brightness Matter
Dark mode can reduce display power on OLED phones, but the savings depend much more on screen brightness and display type than on the setting alone. OLED pixels produce their own light, so darker colors use less display power. LCDs use a shared backlight, so dark colors do not switch off individual pixels in the same way. Android’s developer documentation also notes that dark theme’s energy impact depends on the screen technology. A 2021 Purdue study tested six popular Android apps on four phones. At 30–50% brightness, switching to dark mode reduced power use by an average of 3–9% on the tested OLED phones. At maximum brightness, the reported reduction was 39–47%. These are study results for those devices and apps, not a guarantee of the same increase in battery life on every phone. Practical takeaway: lower brightness is the more dependable way to cut screen power. Dark mode can add a noticeable saving on OLED when the display is bright, but the gain is usually modest indoors. On LCD, use it for comfort or preference rather than expecting the same pixel-level saving.
