Tanker catches fire off Sochi after unmanned-vessel strike, Russian ministry says

A Liberia-flagged oil tanker caught fire off Sochi on Oct. 6 after what Russia’s Transport Ministry described as a strike by an unmanned surface vessel. The ministry said all 23 crew members, all Indian nationals, were rescued and that preliminary information indicated no casualties. The attacker’s identity has not been independently established, and Kyiv had not commented at the time of reporting. [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/oct/07/ukraine-drone-hits-oil-tanker-russia-sochi) and [ABC News](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10-07/oil-tanker-attack-in-black-sea-off-sochi-sparks-giant-fire/107238536) have reported on the incident. The ministry said oil was burning on the Black Sea and that firefighters would approach when conditions were safe. Officials in the nearby Sirius territory closed beaches, while local authorities monitored conditions. The amount of oil released, the tanker’s condition and any environmental impact have not been independently established. This is a separate incident from the strikes on merchant vessels in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone covered in [Mushimu’s earlier report](https://www.mushimu.com/post/8785). *Original editorial illustration created for this report; it is not a photograph.* ![Image](/media/assets/e769728f-4e73-4a46-bd6c-0b0370b47562/media.webp)
