Ukhiya police chief Atikur Rahman told United News of Bangladesh that Sumon had been taken into custody and that a case was being processed. The reports reviewed do not say charges have been filed or establish the manager’s responsibility. The arrest comes amid questions about fire-safety enforcement. Bangladesh’s Fire Service and Civil Defence says the resort had no fire-safety licence and had been formally warned in June that the building was hazardous. The agency says investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire; no cause has been confirmed. The case also comes as local authorities inspect other businesses along Cox’s Bazar–Teknaf Marine Drive. The Business Standard reports that about 250 establishments had deficiencies in at least one of several required development, fire-service or environmental approvals. That does not mean they shared the same violations. ~worldnews
