Trump says Iran wants quick deal as oil shock and Red Sea war widen
U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that Iran wants to reach a deal with Washington "quickly and badly," signaling a possible diplomatic opening even as Middle East fighting widened and threatened global oil supplies. "The failing Nation of Iran wants to make a deal, quickly and badly. I will determine whether or not the U.S.A. will choose to engage — The concept of which we are open to," Trump wrote on Truth Social. His comments came after Gulf Arab states postponed a planned Oman meeting with Iran on reopening the Strait of Hormuz — delayed at Saudi Arabia's request, Tehran said — and after Iran-aligned Houthis claimed a fresh missile-and-drone attack on Saudi Arabia's King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushait. Crude oil jumped more than 4% when markets reopened before paring gains in U.S. morning trade, while the politically sensitive U.S. national average diesel price hit a new all-time high above $6.23 a gallon. Traders warn that if Saudi Arabia's damaged east-west pipeline stays shut, as much as 4% of global oil supply could be cut off. Iran also published a list of 77 ships it said violated its Hormuz operating protocols, warning they could face fines, detention or confiscation.
