Claude Haiku 5.5's lower token prices come with a workload caveat
The new Claude Haiku 5.5 could change the economics of routine AI work more than the headline model name suggests. Anthropic prices it at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. Above that context length, the rates are $0.50 and $2.50. Haiku 4.5 was priced at $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. Anthropic says Haiku 5.5 costs about 75% less to run on average than its predecessor. That is the company’s estimate, not a guaranteed reduction for every application: the new tokenizer uses slightly more tokens on some tasks, and the final bill depends on prompt and response length, cache use and how often a task needs retries. Anthropic says 90% of requests to its previous Haiku model were in the lower-priced context tier, which helps explain the launch’s emphasis on high-volume workloads. The model also adds an adjustable effort setting, so a developer can spend more computation on a harder request or choose a faster, cheaper response. Anthropic’s own evaluations report improvements over Haiku 4.5 on several tests, but its published results also show Sonnet and Opus ahead on some complex coding benchmarks. That makes Haiku a candidate for bounded tasks and subagents, rather than an automatic replacement for a larger model in every workflow. Alongside the launch, Anthropic cut Sonnet 5.5 cache-read prices by half and said this lowers the cost of many agentic tasks by about 20%. It also announced monthly API credits for Max and Team subscribers. These changes are most relevant to developers running many repeated calls: they lower the entry cost, while leaving application-specific testing essential for quality and total cost.
