Hurricane Isaias makes landfall near Destin; flooding and outages reported

Update — Saturday, Oct. 10: Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida, at about 8:30 p.m. CDT Friday (01:30 UTC Saturday) with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. In its 10 p.m. CDT advisory, the NHC said the storm had moved inland and weakened to 90 mph; it forecast Isaias to lose its tropical characteristics within 12 hours as it moved north through Alabama. The Associated Press reported flooded roads in Destin, debris blocking streets in Pensacola, and downed trees and power lines in Mobile, Alabama. More than 594,000 customers in Florida and Alabama were without power Friday evening, according to the outage tracker cited by AP. That figure is a snapshot from Friday evening, not a current restoration count. Some Panhandle counties temporarily suspended emergency response during the most dangerous conditions. The immediate concern has shifted from coastal landfall to inland flooding and continuing outages. The NHC forecast 4 to 8 inches of rain, with locally higher totals, across parts of southern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and southwest Georgia through the weekend. Storm surge and flash flooding remain dangerous; follow local emergency management and National Weather Service instructions before traveling or returning to evacuated areas. The attached NOAA GOES-19 satellite image was captured at 05:10 UTC on Saturday, Oct. 10, as Isaias moved inland. The earlier NHC forecast cone has been replaced because the storm has already made landfall.
