Floodwaters Undermine a Public Building in Nepal, Sending It Into a River
A two-story public building in Nepal collapsed into a swollen, mud-filled river on Sept. 27 after floodwater eroded its foundation, CNN reported. Its video report shows the structure tilting and then being swept into the current. The collapse happened in Baglung district during a weekend of intense rain, flooding and landslides across western Nepal. The Kathmandu Post reported at least 21 deaths across western and south-central Nepal by Sept. 28, with more than 1,500 people displaced and 179 homes completely damaged. Those figures describe the wider disaster, not casualties from the building collapse itself. The episode is a stark example of how rapidly rising water can undermine buildings and public infrastructure. Authorities warned of further flash-flood risk as rivers continued to rise.
