Congo Ebola outbreak passes 4,000 deaths as response faces new setbacks
Congo’s Ebola outbreak has surpassed 4,000 deaths. The Health Ministry’s latest figures, reported by AP, count 4,018 deaths and 8,300 cases since the outbreak was declared in eastern Congo on May 15. Doctors Without Borders says North Kivu has accounted for 40% of newly confirmed cases since late August. The response is also under pressure: an Ebola treatment site inside a displacement camp near Bunia was burned during a weapons search, according to a senior UN official cited by AP, forcing people to flee. AP also reports that some front-line health workers say they have not been paid for August and September.
